On the 29th of March, the annual SGCNZ South-East Auckland Regional Shakespeare Festival was held by Macleans College. The festival was held in the Auditorium. Macleans College, along with many other local schools, competed against each other.

Students worked on their pieces at the very start of Term 1 and were led by student directors who wrote the scripts. Making the script isn’t just about choosing an original Shakespearean play — that was only the first bit — it is about creating their very own spin off. We saw many classic pieces such as Romeo and Juliet, and a whopping 3 groups performed Hamlet.

The competition was divided into 2 categories: 5-minutes and 15-minute pieces. In total, ten 5-minute pieces and six 15-minute pieces competed in this regional round. Macleans entered 4 teams, three of which were 5-minute pieces and one being a 15-minute piece.

Multiple schools competed, including Botany Downs College, Papatoetoe High School, Howick College, De La Salle College, Elim Christian College, and even a Homeschool group!

Each performance was passionately delivered with a unique, clear style, leaving us teary-eyed regardless of whether it was comedic or emotional.

In the end, Macleans Colleges, “Hamlet”, consisting of Mila (Director), Sheridan, Ella, Katie, Eva, Olivia, Holly, Kaesar, and Katherine managed to win the 5-minute category. With Botany Downs Secondary College, “Romeo and Juliet” the 15-minute category.

In addition, a massive congratulations to both Sheridan and Dani, Who received best portrayal of Ophelia and NSSP, respectively.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the event and put so much effort into this.
