On the 30th of March, Kupe and Rutherford House united, as always, to bring the legendary Atomic Kiwi Carnival back to Macleans College.

Never one to disappoint, the annual event is a chance to celebrate house spirit through teamwork in running the event, raise money for two important causes and bring the school together. In that it gave the school exactly what it needed on that sleepy Monday: a warm, vibrant sense of community, bringing joy to all that attended and pulling term 1 to a memorable close.

All the hard work in planning and execution put in by the service captains and prefects, all the students and teachers was obvious; every form class had organised their own stalls selling everything from KFC to tiramisu. Well-loved crowd favourites like Krispy Kreme donuts and hot chips, sold out within the first fifteen minutes.

There was something for everyone at the Atomic Kiwi. The food? Tiramisu. Hot chips. Ice cream and so much more. It was all there looking absolutely delicious – and selling out FAST. Photo booths, fun games and sponge throws generating loads of excitement. And of course the musical acts. Composed of amazingly talented fellow students, these incredible bands filled Rutherford with music.

All for two brilliant causes, through teamwork and enthusiasm the Kupe Whānau pulled together almost $3000 to be donated to their house charity: Save the Kiwi, who are fighting hard to save Aotearoa’s iconic, instantly lovable bird from extinction. Rutherford’s return was just as impressive standing at over $2500 which will all go to Hato Hone St John, an integral part of the NZ healthcare system especially in emergency medical response, while also priding themselves on their community programs and youth groups.
