On the 6th of April, the annual Small House Choir competition was held at the Barbara Kendall Gymnasium with all students in attendance.
The Small House Choir competition is an intra-school event between the eight houses. Small groups of students are made, each with up to twelve singers and a set of instrumentalists, and present a song they have prepared over the course of a term.
The criteria for the performance included musicality, harmony, dynamics, timing, and presentation.
The choirs were purely student-directed, from scheduling rehearsals to arranging the compositions.
Three houses came on top. The top 3 were:
- Kupe; a Stan Walker Medley — He Kakano Ahau, Don’t Dream It’s Over, I Surrender
- Te Kanawa; Clementine by grentperez
- Upham; Like Real People Do by Hozier
The other houses also performed noteworthy songs such as Pepeha by Six60 (Batten), Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (Hillary), When We Were Young by Adele (Mansfield), Chasing Pavements by Adele (Rutherford), and Heather by Conan Gray (Snell).
The competition is usually held in Term 2. But with the move of the Big House Choir competition to Term 4, the event commenced earlier than expected.
Even with the time constraints, the eight houses each produced an outstanding performance. The competition was fierce and even students couldn’t correctly guess who would take the Small House shield.
All Small House performances can be found on YouTube or Facebook via the News Committee’s pages.
Congratulations to the Small House choirs of Kupe, Te Kanawa, and Upham for taking the win! A wonderful way to end the first term of 2023.
