The last Friday of Term One at Macleans College ended on a high note with the much-anticipated annual Small House Choir, held in the Barbara Kendall Gymnasium, which was filled with the excitement of students. This event is a major highlight of the school calendar, bringing together the most talented vocalists and instrumentalists from each house for a showcase of musical collaboration.

This year’s competition introduced a new, exciting twist: each house was challenged to create an original mashup, blending at least two songs of their choice into a seamless performance. With about a month to prepare, students dedicated themselves to daily rehearsals, arranging, and harmonising to perfect their craft.

“Preparing for small house choir was a journey. It was many hours of hard work and patience. Seeing everyone putting in effort and enjoying themselves made me feel proud to be a part of Kupe house. Winning small house was the greatest feeling, being able to see that the judges enjoyed our performance gave us all a sense of relief.” -Ethan Zhang, Kupe Small House Choir

Though the competition this year was fierce with each house delivering memorable performances, only one could come out on top. The top three results were:

  • 1st Place: Kupe – Stan Walker Mashup
  • 2nd Place: Rutherford – ABBA Mashup
  • 3rd Place: Hillary – Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars Mashup

The final decision was made by a panel of expert judges:

  • Mrs McNabb (Head of Music and director of three Macleans choirs)
  • Miss Burnett (Head of Drama and director of the school musical)
  • Mr Harrison (Professional singer and vocal instructor)

A special thank you goes to Dr Miles for overseeing the smooth running of the event, and to our emcees Amelia Hu, Daniel Hulley, and William Lockhart, who kept the event’s energy high.
