At our school, UNICEF is one of the major service extracurriculars that does fundraising for their cause, one being their recent bake sale that happened at Kupe House. But what is UNICEF? And what importance does it have towards our world?
The United Nations is world-renowned for its strive for world peace, and its 30 rights under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It focuses on a very broad global scale, such as journalism on crises around the globe, and upholding international law.
UNICEF instead stands for United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, focusing more on children in need – especially across less fortunate and developing countries. Did you know that we, as children, have 42 fundamental rights? These include:
Around the world, there are organisations set up by UNICEF to further spread awareness of their cause. At Macleans, we have our UNICEF extracurricular holds fundraisers and events to help donate money to UNICEF’s cause.

One of the club’s recent efforts to support the UNICEF cause was a bake sale held on March 25th, students from the UNICEF club baked their own goods to sell to students during lunchtime as one of their fundraising efforts. An executive was asked what the process was like:
“The night before consisted of replying and sending lots of emails. However, in the morning, everything was ready. The execs all gathered in Batten House and ticked the bakers’ names off as they brought the food in. At interval, all execs helped sort out the pricing of the baking – whether it be one, two, or three dollars. About the sale itself, there were around 100 boxes of baking containing varieties of cookies, brownies, cakes, and other sweet delicacies. 15 students volunteered to help sell the food, ensuring that the event ran smoothly. In the end, the sale was a great success, fundraising around over $800 for a good cause.”
A massive thank you to all the students and executives who helped with running this sale!
