On the 15th of February, the first Athletics Day of 2023 was held. This is a time when the 8 different whānaus become ferocious, where the competition between one another has gone haywire. This is a day the houses can finally show off their champion athletes, and get points by entering finals. But most importantly, half a day of no school—fun!
Genders are split for the competition to be fair, with girls on the main field while boys are on the far field. Girls do most of the running and jumping: high jump, 800 m, 200 m, 100 m, and long jump. Boys, however, do most of the throwing added with just a little bit of running on the far field: discus, javelin, 400 m, and shotput.

This year, all year levels cheered radiantly for their own houses, especially the Year 9s. Everyone gave their best effort at doing what they could. The events catered to their needs ranging from competitive to simple participation.
Many, including myself, try competitive whether or not we get in just in case you are a natural at it and didn’t know—this, however, didn’t work out for most of us. We switch over, location and events on our second Athletics Day but that is another story for another time.
Overall, our first athletics day in 2023 was successful in recruiting sportsmen and women to compete in our Athletics Day Finals. Go Macleans!
